About “Graphic Art”



I think most of you have seen graphic art in the city.  I will introduce famous graphic artists in this blog.  The reason why I will introduce graphic artists is because I’m interested in graphic art.  Recently I try to draw some pictures.  I want you to know more about graphic art and artists.  And I want you to be interested in graphic art.

 I’ll introduce some history of graphic art.  Graffiti is when a person  draws a picture in the street mainly with sprays paint.  The beginning was between the 1960s and 1970s in the city of New York.  There are two types of people.  First  is people who think good.  Second is people who think bad.  The first people think their art is artistic.  But the second one thinks it is just a scrawl.  Drawing some pictures on public things in the city is criminal.  I agree with this opinion.  But graffiti has some reasons.  Graffiti has some social messages.  One of them is satirical drawing. And discrimination issues are often expressed.  The Graffiti asks a question of people.

 Furthermore there’s a different issue.  Out of two graphic artists, one is a famous artist, but the other person is an anonymous.  If they draw same picture on the same wall, maybe nameless artist will be caught.  Graffiti art has such a problems.

I think you must see graffiti on the street.  You do not make a denial of graffiti, but please look at it closely.  Maybe you can find difference in your opinion.

This time I will introduce a graffiti artist who I think is the most famous in the world.    The artist is Banksy.    He is active  mainly in U.K.  However he appeared in unexpected places and left his drawings.  Banksy draws satirical society drawings so he is called a political activist.  Almost all of his drawings are  rated high priced.   But Banksy actives   fosters an anonymity.  For that reason his name, his face and all his private information are all guessing things.  A photographer who worked with him several times said “He is normal.  He likes to be inconspicuous and he are known as a being wrapped in mystery.”   Brad Pitt said this about his anonymity.  “He is suppressing his information.  This is great.  Recently mostly people want to be famous.  But Banksy doesn’t think so.”   I have a memory that...

Keith Haring

 Have you ever seen this painting?  I think all you have seen like it or others like it.  This painting was drawn by Keith Haring.  However I think you don’t know his life and what he did.   Keith Haring was a successful artist in the 1980s.  He was born in Pennsylvania on May 4,1958.  After that, he moved to New York and enrolled in a prestigious art school.  In 1980, he started to paint on the walls in subways on the way to his part time job.  It was called “subway drawings “.  His drawings were simple and rhythmical, so they gained popularity by people who were taking the subway.   Keith Haring gradually increased his product.  And he held some drawing exhibitions.  He had close friendships with some artists, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol.  But he fell sick.  It was AIDS.  So he did social action programs for preventing  the AIDS.  He drew some drawings for messages about preventing furth...

Basquiat

I’ll introduce a graffiti artist “Jean-Michel-Basquiat”.  Recently I started to draw sketches.  I went to Basquiat exhibition and saw his paintings.  And I decided to paint. Basquiat was born in Brooklyn on December 22, 1960.  He drew many pictures, when he was a child, and his mother encouraged Basquiat in his artistic activities.  Then he became a high school student.  He started to paint on the walls of the slum and in subways with splay paint.  And he met a famous graffiti artist, Keith Haring.  Keith Haring took notice of him.  And Basquiat held his exhibition to help Keith Haring in New York City. Later Basquiat had the attentions of many people.  He acted with Andy Warhol, but they had drug dependency.  Warhol died from overdose in 1987.  His death had a strong effect on Basquiat.  He used drugs more and more after Warhol’s death.  And in the next year, in 1988, Basquiat was gone.  When he died, he w...
